The Back Of His Hand

Gibbons/Ray

She'd like to be that lady in the park with the baby on her hip
Or the girl getting on the bus, beauty mark upon her lip
Instead of hiding in the dark looking through the window lace
She'd like to be any woman in the world with no bruises on her face
But he'll be waking soon and he'll apologize

She knows he's sorry, she knows he's feeling bad
She knows he didn't want to hurt her but she made him crazy mad
She knows it's her fault and she should try to understand
She knows it like the Back Of His Hand

The morning sun doesn't shine on her front yard, never reaches through the lace
Only shines on the pretty and the smart that are passing by her gate
He said she isn't worth a damn, he ought to walk right out the door
Sometimes he says it with his hand, it doesn't hurt much anymore
But he don't maen those things and he'll apologize

(chorus)

But she still remembers the girl who wasn't afraid of the world

She got up just before the morning light, only grabbed a couple things
Took the cash from the cookie jar, left behind her wedding ring
And she ran and got on the bus with the girl she recognized
And she sank back in her seat, morning sunshine in her eyes
And as she flew away she realized

That she's not sorry and she's not feeling bad
She knows he had no right to hurt her and it makes her crazy mad
She knows it's his fault and that he'll never understand
She knows it like the back of his hand
